While it's reasonable to believe that Tennessee Whiskey is just whiskey created in Tennessee, there's actually more to it than that (though, of course, it's a part of it). Here's what you should know.

Tennessee Whiskey is created in the same way as Bourbon, using 51 percent maize and matured in charred new white oak barrels. However, Tennessee Whiskey is distinguished by one further stage, known as the Lincoln County Process.

Tennessee Whiskey charcoal is made from specifically chosen sugar maple trees, which are frequently seasonally burnt on the grounds to produce charcoal. Charcoal is employed in distilling for its filtering capabilities, which are supposed to result in a smoother overall product — therefore the Lincoln County Process is also known as "charcoal mellowing."

Other whiskeys can be created in Tennessee, but they will not be branded "Tennessee Whiskey" unless they are 51 percent maize and employ the Lincoln County Process.

Best Tennessee Whiskey Brands

George Dickel Barrel Select Tennessee Whisky

This is possibly the greatest example of Tennessee whiskey at its best. It is distilled by George Dickel & Co., which was founded in 1870 and is a favourite among Tennessee whiskey enthusiasts. The firm is one of the world's top two distillers, the other being its bitter competitor, Jack Daniels.

George Dickel Barrel Select is made from a maize (84%), malted barley, and rye mash. It is packaged in a rectangular bottle with a wood and cork closure. The whiskey is aged between 10 and 12 years and is bottled at 86 proof. It is displayed well in a glass with an amber hue, but it has a dark bronze colour in the bottle. When it comes to the bottle, it features a fold-style lettering on the front and a basic playout, giving it an archaic air. The bottle's only serious flaw is the neck cover, which is difficult to remove.

This whiskey, made from ten different casks, has a subtle smokey and sweet flavour. There are notes of maize, vanilla, and wood grain, as well as mint and allspice. It flows softly down the throat. You'll also feel a somewhat spicy kick near the finish.

George Dickel Rye Whisky

Here's another George Dickel product that, although being regarded a top-tiered spirit, is reasonably priced. Fermented with yeast and made from a mash of rye (95%) and malted barley (5%). It should be mentioned that the rye is cooled and filtered through sugar maple wood charcoal.

George Dickel Rye Whisky, distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, has a prominent and accessible scent. It turns a pale gold hue when poured into a glass. You'll detect vanilla, marshmallow, fallen leaves, and softly burnt wood. There's also a tinge of cooked peaches. It concludes with a spicy kick that carries minimal heat, thanks to the rye.

But maybe the most obvious advantage of this whiskey is its low price. It is quite reasonable for its quality at less than $30. Its high rye content distinguishes it from its competitors at a cheap price range. The George Dickel Rye Whisky is difficult to top for excellent sipping rye at such a low price.

Prichard’s Tennessee Whiskey

Prichard's Distillery released this Tennessee whiskey to mark its ten-year anniversary. Prichard Distillery, located near Kelso, Tennessee, takes pride in being the sole company who identifies their product as Tennessee whiskey while not employing the Lincoln County Process. This is because of an unique exception granted by Tennessee law passed in 2013.

It's made mostly of white maize, with a little malted barley and rye thrown in for good measure. It is an easy drinking liquor distilled according to Irish tradition, matured to 10 years in barrel and bottled at 80 proof. You'll note traces of robust tastes and scents of dried fruit, ginger, caramel, and oak when you sip it.

Heaven’s Door Straight Tennessee Bourbon

Heaven's Door is a distillery in Nashville, Tennessee. It is the brainchild of musician Bob Dylan. Aside from that intriguing fact, this distillery may compete in terms of having a solid selection of spirits. This Tennessee whiskey is a prime example.

The whiskey comes in a bottle with unusual iron gates designed by the famed musician at his Black Buffalo Ironworks workshop. It turns a faint amber tint when poured into a glass.

This full-bodied, creamy whiskey has a modest rye content. It features overtones of maple and oak from being aged in barrel for ten years. In keeping with Lincoln County Process history, charcoal columns made of sugar maple trees were employed to smooth it out.

The nose smells like nougat and freshly baked bread. The mild sweetness of candied walnuts and grilled pineapple is fairly obvious upon tasting. Notes of steeped tobacco and cooked peaches add a kick to the whiskey, making for an excellent whiskey experience.

This whiskey got a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a Double Gold at the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition both in 2018.

Corsair Ryemageddon Whiskey

If we had to select one complaint about Corsair's Ryemageddon Whiskey, it would be that this "aged spirit" lacks an age declaration, causing us to suspect it's fairly young. Having said that, we're not convinced the age really matters because the tastes speak for themselves. After all, we're talking about the same people that were named Whisky Magazine's 2013 Craft Distillery of the Year, including Darek Bell, the master distiller who learnt his trade at the Bruichladdich Distilling Academy in Islay, Scotland.

Rymaggedon is a novel twist on a traditional inebriant made from a mash of 80% malted rye and 20% chocolate rye that should surprise even the most seasoned consumers. If Corsair has taught us anything about their work, it's to expect the unexpected and to look for unusual exceptionality.

Collier and McKeel Tennessee Whiskey

The Lincoln Process — named after Lincoln County, Tennessee, where Jack Daniel's was founded — is a unique procedure employed in the production of whiskey that involves filtering the spirit through charcoal chips prior to cask ageing. This technique is what gives Tennessee whiskey its distinct taste characteristics, and it is closely adhered to by the men at Collier and McKeel.

This handcrafted brew originates from Nashville and is created with a unique mash bill of maize, rye, and malted barley. The end result is a smoky, rich spirit with touches of sweetness and just the proper amount of earthiness to balance out the profile.

Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey

Whiskey distillers have a reputation for being rigid about following traditions. In the case of our Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey, it's that stubbornness that makes this spirit stand out from the crowd.

Every batch of this whiskey is handmade from start to finish using locally sourced ingredients from the wonderful state of Tennessee, barreled around 110 proof, and bottled at the precise right moment for the optimal flavour and colour — exactly as it has been done since the brand's namesake began creating it.

Jack Daniel’s 150th Anniversary Tennessee Whiskey

Simply simply, a list of the top Tennessee whiskeys would be incomplete without include Jack Daniel's. The brand's influence on the liquor business is indisputable, notably in popularising Tennessee whiskey across the world. This carefully crafted Tennessee whiskey was released to mark the brand's 150th anniversary, so consider it a premium offering.

This whiskey is prepared with an 80% maize mash bill, 12% barley, and 8% rye. It is then filtered through sugar maple charcoal before being aged in slow-roasted oak barrels. There is no age statement on this 100 proof whiskey.

When poured into a glass, the whiskey has a faint copper tint. It has a pleasant scent with vanilla and maple notes. There are hints of spicy and dried citrus, as well as toasted barrel char. The whiskey has a light mouthfeel and a sweet vanilla taste with a tart and cherry accent.

But make no mistake: this Jack Daniel's offering is a premium Tennessee whiskey with a hefty price tag. If you are a true whiskey connoisseur, this is something you should have in your cabinet.

Jack Daniels’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof

This Tennessee whiskey does not have an age statement, although it is said to have been matured for 4-7 years in fresh charred oak barrels.

The nose combines bananas and maple sugar sweets with a smokey smell. The fragrance of alcohol is detectable, but not overbearing. It is rich and welcoming, and it is extremely different from American whiskey.

The palate reveals aromas of sweet caramel, burned wood, pipe tobacco, and bananas. There's also a hint of spice and nuttiness that complements the maple sugar sweet. It's difficult to discern distinct flavours, but you'll notice that the overall blend is unusual and delightful. The whiskey covers the mouth nicely and has a medium weight feel to it.

The heat comes on strong at the end, with a peppery burn that attests to the whiskey's high proof. It may be too spicy for some drinkers. However, if you want a robust and spicy finish, this is the drink for you. The heat also diminishes rapidly, leaving notes of maple sugar candy and charred wood that linger for a long time.

Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select

Last but not least, there is this 94 proof whiskey. It was originally released in the late 1990s and has since become one of the distiller's top products. As the name implies, this is tapped from a single barrel, thus bottles pulled from one barrel may taste somewhat different from bottles drawn from another.

The grains used to make this whiskey include maize, rye, and malted barley. This Tennessee whiskey combines delicate flavours of spice and caramel with sweet aromatics to create a one-of-a-kind taste. When poured into a glass, the liquor takes on a caramel tint.

It has a sweet cinnamon flavour with hints of honey, black tea, and butter on the aroma. With creamy toffee, you could perceive a little nutty fragrance. Unlike some bourbons, it doesn't feel harsh in the mouth.
